Well, it's tomorrow, but I wanted to blog today. I've just finished up my first, almost-full week of work, and everything's good! I'm getting a little over-excited for my first paycheck and will probably be having to reign myself in quite a bit to keep me from going on a shopping spree! (That's what paycheck #4 will be for.)
But the Kentucky Derby is a favorite of mine, and I make a point to watch it every year. I've always been a horse obsessed little girl; and I've never out grown it. Just let me see a horse even at a distance and I'll happily squeal "ponies!" and get all smiley.
I haven't had a chance to make anything Derby-themed, but I do have one pendant that will loosely-work. It's my Magic Vial - Garden Rose (it is the "Run for the Roses!")

One of my favorite parts of the Kentucky Derby (over other horse races, or even other legs of the triple crown) are the hats! Yes, I love hats, and I LOVE big, fancy, wide-brimmed hats in particular!
My favorite derby-style hat on Etsy that I found is from Carolina Hat Girl. It's got everything, a huge broad brim, a good straw base, and pretty roses as accent. This particular hat is called "de jeuner dans le parc," which, don't ask me to translate, because I don't speak French.
She has quite a few other styles as well, for those of you who might not be quite as big fans of the excessive brim as I am :-)

Love that hat..I can remember my Grandmother wearing hats like that to the Derby every year. I miss Kentucky especially this time of year...
Cool pendant! I used to love the Derby too until Barbaro got hurt in the triple crown and Eight Belles died last year. I managed a Thoroughbred farm for 8 years and still love the breed.
They are amazing creatures!
Congratulations on the job.
Love horse racing - tend to stay away because I love it too much - but maybe I'll watch tomorrow...
Thanks guys!
And yeah, I've watched the KY Derby every year since I was a little girl. I was always absolutely horse-crazy, and I've never out grown it!
The only time I ever bet on the race was when I was in TN and had a boss who went to the derby every year. I gave him $20 and told him to put it on Barbaro.
He came back and gave me my $20, and apologized that he thought I couldn't possibly know enough about horse racing, so he'd put my money (and his) on another horse instead.
And yes, I followed the whole Barbaro saga quite tearfully, I kept routing for him!
Me too. I have fond memories of watching the race with my grandfather (who died when I was 10), or looking at the lists of winners on the Kentucky Derby glasses he had, which he left to me when he died. That call to the post still gives me chills.
Although I agree with Jennifer about the injuries and such :( There's a lot wrong with the industry.
